This is a Hybrid Online-Offline SCA Coffee Skills Program offered on-site with our friend and coffee partner Lumen Coffee Roastery of Los Angeles, CA. Join us prior to CoffeeFest LA and earn your SCA Coffee Roasting Certification.

This 1.5 day program allows both Intermediate and Professional SCA Coffee Learners who have completed their SCA.Training advanced study primers to focus on testing and demonstrating their practical skills required for SCA Intermediate and/or Professional level certifications.

All primer study materials and course coaching calls shall be completed prior to taking your practical in-person exam and your online-written exam. Come to your advanced SCA practical skills exam prepared to pass your certification.

This course is SCA certified and purchase includes certification fees.

As part of the Coffee Skills Program the Specialty Coffee Association is recognized globally as a leading authority in specialty coffee. SCA Intermediate Roasting Exam!

During our course together we will focus on the practical skill exams required for certification at this course level. All theory and concepts must be held (studied) by students prior to attending these SCA exam days.

Instructions to join your course Primer (theory lectures) follow. Only those learners who have purchased and completed course materials per directions will be admitted to take their practical skills exams.

Intermediate Roasting Course Information

Updated Course Description: The Roasting Intermediate course builds upon the introductory concepts of the Foundation course. It is ideal for someone who has roasting and desires to gain a deeper understanding of the roast profile, how the profile relates to color, the relationship between roast profile and sensory expression, and the impact of development time. Learners will further explore the physical and chemical changes as well as basic thermodynamics and heat transfer that occurs during the roast. Thereafter there will be an introduction to sample roasting and a review of safety and maintenance protocols in the roasting plant.

Course Length: Minimum 21 hours including practical exam.

Pre-requisites: None; Introduction to Coffee, Roasting Foundations, Green Coffee Foundation, and Sensory Skills Foundation recommended. All knowledge and skill from these modules will be assumed as being held and may be tested through the practical and/or written assessments.

Roasting Intermediate Resources

Written Exam Information:

Total Exam: 35 Questions.
Total Time Allowed: 37 minutes.
Passing Score: 70% and above.

Practical Exam Information:

Total Time Allowed: 3 Hours.
Total Number of Sections: 4
Passing Score: 70% and above.
